Second Occupy Movement News Update of the Day: As Occupy Wall Street enters its fifth week, the movement has grown exponentially to include hundreds of cities across the country and around the world.

Mother Jones has been keeping tabs on the solidarity protests around the country, while the Guardian has put together a list of global events. Solidarity for the movement has officially spread to all seven continents, as the photo above clearly shows.

Occupy Wall Street organizers today announced that they have raised nearly $300,000 in cash, all of which has been deposited at Amalgamated Bank — “the only 100 percent union-owned bank in the United States.” OWS is also storing large amounts of food and other supplies “for long-term occupation” at a space donated by the United Federation of Teachers.

“We’re moving fast, without a hierarchical structure and lots of gears turning,” college student-cum-political organizer Justin Strekal is quoted as saying. “Egos are clashing, but this is participatory democracy in a little park.” Both The New Yorker and TIME magazine have dedicated their cover stories to the Occupy Wall Street movement.

According to a just-published Quinnipiac University poll, 67% of New Yorkers said they support the Occupy Wall Street movement. 87% think they should be allowed to remain in Zuccotti Park, so long as they behave lawfully.

The Boston Globe’s Big Picture and The Atlantic’s In Focus posted photos from this past weekend’s global “Day of Rage.” In Russia, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin promised CEOs of leading corporate entities that approved increases in social spending would prevent similar protests from taking place there.

Back in the United States, the White House, referring to “frustrations” felt by middle and working-class citizens, used the term “99 percent” for the first time.

Dr. Cornel West, who was arrested while protesting with Occupy D.C. outside the Supreme Court, will not be prosecuted. Elsewhere, Bo Diddley’s son and Occupy Gainesville participant Ellas Anthony McDaniel was arrested, of all places, on Bo Diddley Community Plaza.
